We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Engineer to join the Payments Platform Technology team within a leading Retail Banking business. You'll be stepping into a hands-on technical leadership role, working across the cards and payments platforms on multiple strategic initiatives concurrently, in close partnership with product, architecture, and delivery teams.

As a Principal Engineer, you will:

• Provide technical leadership across a team of ~50 engineers, influencing design and implementation across the Payments and Cards domains.

• Lead the end-to-end technical design and architecture of complex systems supporting next-generation retail payments capabilities.

• Drive engineering excellence, set standards, and mentor teams to deliver scalable, secure, and high-performance solutions.

• Collaborate with architecture, product, operations, and security stakeholders to shape the future of payments technology.

• Contribute to long-term platform strategy and help modernise legacy systems as part of broader transformation efforts.

What We're Looking For:

• Proven experience operating at a Principal Engineer or Engineering Management level, within a high-performing engineering culture.

• Deep expertise in distributed systems design, API development, and cloud-native architectures (preferably AWS).

• A hands-on engineering background with Java, Kotlin, or similar backend languages, and experience in microservices and event-driven architectures (e.g., Kafka).

• Strong knowledge of payments infrastructure, industry standards (e.g., NPP, BPAY, DE, ISO 20022), or cards platforms (desirable).

• A track record of influencing large engineering teams and leading by example in a collaborative, agile environment.

• Experience aligning stakeholders and leading through complexity and change.
