Role: Senior Cloud Engineer
Day Rate: $1100 - $1200
Contract Length: Initial contract to 30/06/26 (with 12 month extensions)
Location: Canberra/WFH Flex
An Australian Government enterprise environment is seeking an experienced Senior Cloud Engineer to join a Cloud and Infrastructure Operations team within a large-scale transformation program.
This role will work across highly sensitive and complex cloud environments, supporting both project delivery and business-as-usual operations. The primary focus will be on Azure infrastructure and Microsoft 365 services, with exposure to AWS where required.
You will operate with a high degree of autonomy, providing expert technical advice while collaborating closely with program leadership, operations teams, and business stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Design, management and optimisation of Azure infrastructure and services
Administration and enhancement of Microsoft 365 services including:
Exchange Online (Mail)
File collaboration platforms
Microsoft Teams and associated services
Identity and access management, including:
Entra ID (Azure AD)
Entra ID Connect
Azure B2C (where applicable)
Infrastructure automation and configuration management
Security compliance configuration and uplift activities
Migration of users, systems, and data to cloud platforms
Development and maintenance of technical documentation
Operational handover and support transition activities
Providing clear, evidence-based advice to program leadership
Proactive identification and management of infrastructure risk
Engagement with stakeholders to ensure business requirements are met
Essential Experience
You must demonstrate extensive hands-on experience delivering enterprise cloud solutions using Microsoft Azure, including some or all of the following:
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) design and management
Identity services - Entra ID (AAD), Azure B2C, Entra ID Connect
API Management (APIM) - API development, maintenance, and infrastructure
Serverless compute - Azure Functions, App Services / Web Apps
Storage services - Blob storage, file shares, queues, tables
Integration services - Service Bus, Event Hub
Certificate and secrets management - Key Vault
Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines using YAML, ARM templates and Bicep
Experience migrating existing infrastructure and workloads to Azure
Strong understanding of risk management principles in infrastructure environments
Desirable Experience
Intune device management and mobile configuration
Microsoft 365 configuration aligned with DTA best-practice blueprints
Enterprise or nationwide telephony and contact centre solutions
Exposure to AWS enterprise services, including:
Landing Zone uplifts
AWS Identity Centre
AWS Audit Manager
Cloud certifications (Azure and/or AWS)
Tertiary qualifications in IT, Computer Science or Engineering
Strong experience with Git and branching strategies
Power Platform automation experience
Knowledge of IT frameworks such as ITIL and TOGAF
Understanding of Commonwealth ICT and governance frameworks
Ability to mentor team members and influence senior stakeholders
