Our client is a large, well-established retail organisation with a significant technology function supporting products and services used by customers across Australia and internationally.

The technology teams are working on a lot of new initiatives, with a strong focus on modern engineering practices, AI, APIs, microservices and event-driven architecture. You'll be joining a collaborative engineering team that delivers a lot of value to the wider business, with a strong focus on building and evolving new services that support loyalty, benefits and promotional activity.

About the role

This is a genuinely hands-on Technical Lead role for someone who wants to stay close to the code while taking ownership of technical direction across key projects.

You'll be roughly 50/50 hands-on development and technical leadership, spending plenty of time on the tools alongside breaking down technical problems, making technical decisions and contributing to technical documentation.

The team is heavily backend focused and is building out new APIs and microservices using event-driven architecture. You'll work alongside multiple engineering teams, including Booking, Front End and Applications, so being comfortable collaborating, asking questions and influencing technical decisions will be important.

There are no direct reports in this role. Instead, you'll provide technical leadership across parts of the project, mentor developers and help guide the team through technical challenges and decisions.

They're open to an experienced Technical Lead, but equally interested in a strong Senior Engineer who is technically sound, driven and ready to take that next step into technical leadership.

Key skills

• Strong hands-on experience with Node.js and TypeScript.
• Strong AWS experience, particularly Lambda and SQS.
• Experience with NestJS.
• Strong understanding of event-driven architecture.
• Experience designing and building APIs and microservices.
• Strong backend engineering experience.
• Experience working with distributed services and modern architecture patterns.
• Comfortable breaking down complex technical problems and making technical decisions.
• Experience mentoring and supporting other developers.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work across multiple engineering teams.
• A self-starter who is enthusiastic about new technology and genuinely wants to remain hands-on.
