Principal Engineer | Full Stack Java

Opportunity to join one of Australia's leading enterprise organisations. We're seeking a hands-on Principal Engineer to lead the technical direction of the platforms that deliver timely, secure and reliable communications across multiple channels. This is a permanent role with 2-3 days a week on-site, South Brisbane/Gold Coast

The Opportunity
You'll be the senior technical voice across critical high availability platforms, data, decisioning and integrations, guiding teams from architecture through to production. This is very much a player-coach style role, which takes strategic oversight but stays very close to the code, working across multiple teams and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Set architecture and engineering standards across multiple teams.
• Design reusable APIs, event patterns, platform services and automation.
• Improve scalability, observability, resilience and traceability.
• Reduce reliance on legacy platforms and strengthen security, privacy and consent.
• Lead key technical decisions and support major incident resolution.
• Mentor senior engineers and lift engineering capability across the group.
• Identify where AI and automation can improve productivity and customer delivery.

Skills & Experience

• Strong full stack experience with hands-on Java, Spring Boot and TypeScript
• Proven delivery of large-scale distributed platforms supporting high-volume, business-critical services.
• Deep knowledge of event driven and API first architecture, including streaming, async processing and failure handling.
• Cloud and platform engineering experience across containers, CI/CD, infrastructure as code and automation
• Hands-on experience designing and implementing AI agents and automated workflows in enterprise environments.
• Strong grasp of observability, reliability, incident management and disaster recovery
• Technical leadership across multiple teams while staying hands-on with code reviews and architecture.
• Highly regulated industry experience is very desirable.
